Live captioning

A little planning can go a long way. Ask participants beforehand if they’ll need any accommodations.

Issue: A virtual event held on a platform that doesn’t provide captioning or live translation to American Sign Language.

Who’s affected: Participants who are Deaf or hard of hearing

WCAG standard:  Guideline 1.2.9: Audio-only (Live)

What to do: Use a platform that provides auto captioning and make sure it’s turned on. Provide a transcript of the event afterward. Consider providing (hiring) live Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) transcription or ASL translation. If possible provide important materials before the event.

Recommended tools: Zoom, Accessible Meetings and Presentations quick reference.
