What are Patterns?

Block patterns, or just “patterns,” are pre-made designs or layouts of grouped blocks that you can insert into posts and pages that can be modified and edited depending on your needs.

Why use patterns?

Patterns are helpful for repeated content across your site, repeated structures across your site, and repeated design or layout, on your website. It saves you time creating these elements, and provides visual consistency.

The Forty-Two Design System provides variety of different patterns to be used throughout your website. Using patterns allows for CoE departments to have a cohesive look and feel while offering the ability to customize elements to meet unique department branding needs. 

Insert a Pattern

  • Open the Block inserter, and click the “Patterns” tab. 
  • Patterns are organized into categories. Click on a category to view previews of the patterns. Scroll for more options.
  • Either drag and drop the pattern you want onto the page, or double-click it to insert.
  • You can also access the patterns library by selecting the “Explore all patterns” button.

Select the Block Inserter, then navigate to the Patterns tab to view available 42 Design System patterns, organized into categories (e.g. All, Alerts, Headers, etc.). Scroll through the sidebar to view more patterns included in the opened category. To view all patterns, select the Explore all patterns button at the end of the list of categories.

Edit the Pattern as Needed

  • Once inserted, the pattern can be edited as needed!
  • Notice how the pattern is made up of a set of grouped of blocks.
  • Use the setting tool bar on the right to further customize blocks within the pattern.
  • Done!
